Steps to becoming a Licensed Teacher

Elementary Education Degree

  • Complete prerequisite coursework with a C or better.

  • Complete required courses for entering the Elementary Teacher Education Program with a C average or better.

  • Attain a minimum overall GPA of 2.50

  • Pass all parts of the PRAXIS I Preprofessional Skills Test (PPST)

  • Apply to the Teacher Education Program

  • Once admitted into the teacher education program, a 4 semesters sequence of blocked and field based courses are required which includes either 1 or 2 semesters of student teaching.

  • Elementary Education students must also pass the Elementary Reading Specialist Test for certification



Secondary Teaching Degree

  • Choose a specialty area/content area of study: English, Foreign Language, French, German, Spanish, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies

  • Complete the core required courses along with required content area courses with a C or higher.

  • Attain a minimum overall GPA of 2.50

  • Pass all parts of the PRAXIS I Preprofessional Skills Test (PPST)

  • Apply to the Teacher Education Program

  • Once admitted into the teacher education program, a 4 semesters sequence of blocked and field based courses are required which includes either 1 or 2 semesters of student teaching.

  • Secondary Education Students must also pass the special content area of the PRAXIS II for certification
